Hydrafacial
In the quest for clear, healthy, glowing skin, dozens of different skincare treatments and facials claim to be the best. While skin-rejuvenating and glow-inducing treatments may come and go, one that continually stands the test of time is the Hydrafacial. This tried-and-true facial treatment is popular among patients and beloved by aestheticians and skincare experts.
What is a Hydrafacial?
A Hydrafacial is a unique, branded type of skincare treatment facial that uses a patented technology. The Hydrafacial hydradermabrasion system consists of several steps that hone in on cleaning, exfoliating, extracting, and hydrating the skin. Hydration plus microdermabrasion is at the core of the treatment, and the Hydrafacial utilizes a specialized wand with a resurfacing tip. The wand helps to exfoliate the skin while a gentle dose of skin-safe suction is applied to suck out dirt, oil, and other pore-clogging impurities (also known to Hydrafacial fans as the ‘gunk.’)
Every Hydrafacial treatment consists of three basic steps: cleanse, extract, and hydrate. During the cleanse phase, the treatment relies on a gentle peel to exfoliate the top layer of skin to reveal fresh, new skin underneath. Next comes the extraction stage of the treatment, where impurities are lifted out of the pores with gentle suction. Then, the skin is hydrated sufficiently with moisturizers and customized ingredients.
Hydrafacial is unique because one of several different branded boosters and serums can be integrated into the treatment, helping to further address specific skincare concerns like acne, discoloration, textural changes, and even the common signs of aging.
The face is the most commonly treated area with a Hydrafacial, but that doesn’t mean other body parts are off limits. They can be used on the butt, thighs, back, neck, chest, hands, and arms. There’s even a scalp version and targeted variations for smaller areas of concern like the lips and eyes.

How a Hydrafacial Treatment Works
The skin is first cleansed and then exfoliated during the treatment, which takes about 30 minutes. Unlike a traditional facial done by hand, a Hydrafacial works by gliding the resurfacing tipped wand across the skin as it dispenses a cool liquid solution of water and an exfoliation formula containing salicylic and glycolic acids.
As the Hydrafacial tip exfoliates the skin, you may feel a cooling sensation, but it’s relatively comfortable and won’t hurt or damage the skin. There’s also painless suction to help dislodge impurities within the pores. Like a manual extraction, the extraction portion of the treatment deep cleans the pores so nothing is blocking the follicle opening.
After the skin is well-cleansed and exfoliated, it’s time for a customized serum or booster to be applied. Based on the current condition of your skin, your aesthetician will select the best serum or booster for your skin needs. Like other parts of the treatment, the handpiece is used to apply the serum or booster to the skin. Other add-ons are available, including LED light therapy and lymphatic drainage. Every treatment delivers an immediate healthy glow with zero downtime.
The Hydrafacial Options
No matter your skin concerns or where they arise, a Hydrafacial treatment can help target them to get your skin back on track to healthy. The most popular areas to perform a Hydrafacial include:
The Face
The treatment is the gold standard facial for addressing common skincare concerns like fine lines, wrinkles, stubborn dark spots, elasticity changes, redness, dryness and dehydration, pigmentation, congestion and acne, and enlarged pores.
The Body
The skin on the body is equally susceptible to breakouts, discoloration, and texture changes as the face. To help target skin issues on the body, the Hydrafacial can be used to reduce redness, congestion, breakouts, and texture changes on the back, butt, thighs, arms, neck, chest, and hands.
The Lips and Eyes
The Hydrafacial can also treat smaller, more delicate areas of the face. Using the targeted Perk Lip and Perk Eye treatments, the Hydrafacial can help revitalize and exfoliate the lips and eye areas, leaving the lips plumper, hydrated, and smoother and the eyes brighter, firmer, more toned, and rejuvenated.
The Scalp
A healthy scalp is the cornerstone of healthy hair, but when impurities bog down the scalp, they can impede hair health and growth. The Keravive treatment helps to decongest the scalp to improve health and support natural hair growth.

What Separates Hydrafacials From Other Specialized Facials
A Hydrafacial differs from other types of facial treatment in its ability to effectively remove the outermost layer of dead skin through suction. The benefit of this compared to another exfoliating treatment, like microdermabrasion, for example, is that with a Hydrafacial, there’s essentially no irritation or sensitivity to the skin because the wand isn’t nearly as abrasive. Adding water and a gentle exfoliation liquid formula to the mix makes the treatment safe with no downtime. Plus, it is safe for all skin types and tones.
Who is a Hydrafacial For?
The nice thing about a Hydrafacial is that it’s a great skin-refreshing treatment for every skin type. Whether your skin is dry, red, or even acne-prone, a Hydrafacial can help treat the current symptoms and get your skin healthy. The Hydrafacial is excellent for anyone concerned with fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, loss of firmness, enlarged pores, and the signs of aging who want soft, hydrated, clear, glowy, and plump skin. However, if you have an active rash, sunburn, rosacea, or are pregnant, you should avoid treatment.

The Results
With a Hydrafacial, you’ll see a noticeable improvement in your skin immediately that continues to improve over the next week. The most common change is a more even skin tone and a natural, healthy glow with smaller-looking pores. The skin also emerges after treatment far more hydrated, which can last for upwards of one week.
It’s best to invest in a series of treatments to reap the benefits of a Hydrafacial since the results are cumulative and will improve with regular treatments. One monthly Hydrafacial will help decrease the look of fine lines, wrinkles, brown spots, and congestion, making the skin healthier.

Common FAQs
There’s not much to do in the days leading up to your Hydrafacial treatment, but it’s always best to be gentle on your skin. To reduce the potential for irritation, we recommend avoiding exfoliating or potentially irritating ingredients, like retinoids, AHAs, and BHAs, for a few days before your treatment. Of course, avoid any unnecessary sun exposure, which can make the skin more sensitive to the treatment. You’ll also want to schedule any injectable treatments and fillers until after your treatment so that the treatment does not disrupt the placement of any recent injectables.
Hydrafacials are safe skin treatments with minimal side effects, if any. Some people experience a blemish or two in the days following the treatment, which can happen with any type of extraction. There may also be a slight flush to the skin for the first 30 to 60 minutes, which will quickly subside.
Stick with a gentle skin routine for the first few days after a facial, just like a regular facial. We recommend using a gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen for the first two to three days after a Hydrafacial, then it’s safe to resume your regular skincare routine.
